How to think in decades when you still pay rent monthly
Long-term thinking for people who can't afford to wait.
The most successful founders are famous for long time horizons. That advice is hard to use when rent is due in two weeks. The answer isn't to choose between the short and long term. It's to split your decisions into two lanes.
Lane one: this month
Pay the bills. Take work that is honest and reasonably close to your skills. Don't feel guilty about it; survival buys you the right to keep playing.
Lane two: this decade
Protect a small, fixed block of time each week for the thing that compounds: a skill, an audience, a product, a reputation. Even three hours a week is 150 hours a year.
The rule that connects them
Never let lane one make a decision that damages lane two. Don't sign a contract that stops you building your own thing. Don't burn a relationship you'll need later. Don't take money that comes with your name on something you're ashamed of.
A simple test
When you're unsure, ask: "Will I be glad I did this in ten years, or just relieved I did it this month?" Relief is fine for lane one. Lane two needs the first answer.
